How I Do Impromptu Travel on the Cheap

My family is known for making last minute decisions for a quick road trip. I know lots of people like to plan far in advance for summer travel. Summer vacations usually mean the itinerary has been planned to a tee, plane tickets have been purchased and hotel rooms booked for months. Because my husband and I are both entrepreneurs our schedules are flexible but can also be unpredictable, so plans far in advance don’t always work for us, but impromptu travel does!

Last weekend my children were gone for a few days visiting with my husband’s aunt. On a Monday afternoon we decided to take a quick road trip. We really wanted to go to the beach, but the nearest beach which is Tybee Island is about a four hour drive, so we would have made it there late in the evening. We decided on Chattanooga! Chattanooga is only an hour and forty minute drive from downtown Atlanta. Even closer if you live in Marietta or Kennesaw.

I wanted to keep this trip budget friendly, so I grabbed some items from the fridge and a blanket so that we could have a picnic in Coolidge Park. If you plan to head to Chattanooga with kids, Coolidge Park has a fun splash pad, which is also FREE. We filled up the tank, and hit the road! When thinking of budget friendly trips, think of where you can go nearby that will be a tank of gas or less. This usually means destinations under 300 miles give or take. Going to Chattanooga was only 1/4 of a tank of gas for us.

Once we arrive to our location, we check out all of the FREE sights. With a quick Google search you can find out what’s free or low cost in an area. State Parks, historic landmarks, walking trails, lakes, rivers, etc are all FREE. Sometimes there is a small fee for parking.

Enjoy the day, take some pics, and feel good knowing you traveled some place that didn’t break the bank! If you do decide to stay overnight, always check www.hotelstonight.com. They show you what hotels are available in an area at a discount rate specifically for last minute travel.

Here are some pics from our recent impromptu trip to Chattanooga!

I haven’t been to Chattanooga in years and I didn’t realize it was so close by! Definitely a trip that I could take during the day with my little.
