Should You Take Your Children to See Black Panther

Earlier today I went to an early screening of Black Panther. Black Panther is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. I know people who have been planning their Black Panther outfits for months and bought their opening night tickets weeks ago. Black Panther means a lot, to a lot of people and I’m here for it. This movie is black excellence at it’s finest. 

 

I went into the movie being completely objective as a parent. With Black Panther’s PG-13 rating, was it something that I wanted to take my children to see? I know a lot of PG-13 movies today are more like Rated R. I was looking for different things wondering if the content would be okay for my 7, 10, and 12 year old to view.

Here’s the synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

So here are the answers to the questions most parents want to know! 

Is there cursing?

I heard maybe 4-5 curse words in the whole movie, and none of them were F Bombs.

Is there any sexual content?

There are no sexual scenes in Black Panther. There were two kisses throughout the entire movie. One closer to the beginning and one at the end. No romantic relationships were played up or really focused on. There were no overt roles of feminism or chauvinism. Men and women were equally strong and had great character roles.

Is there too much violence?

There are lots of fight scenes in Black Panther. Keep in mind it’s a Marvel Movie based on the comic book Black Panther. So you’ll see lots of action and fighting. Nothing is overly filled with blood and gore. More like punching and kicking, and there are some pretty cool weapons.

In Black Panther there is some talk about ancestors, ritual practices, and some magic. There were also some pretty profound quotes in the movie and quite a few laughs. The costume designs were amazing and Wakanda was beautiful. Overall I really enjoyed it and thought it was an AMAZING movie and that’s saying the least. It was epic and grand! I think it’s appropriate for most children if they’ve seen fight scenes in other movies. I do plan on taking my children, and they’ve been looking forward to it. Black Panther opens nationwide this Friday February 16th!
